Circular Resources

Rethinking our resource use

Brambles’ 2030 Circular Resources target area aims to reach 80% net-positive solutions for Brambles’ product waste, and for virgin plastic substitution in Brambles’ products.

Brambles’ life cycle and circularity mindset extends beyond asset productivity as we also embed circular economy principles throughout the product lifecycle, starting by using LCAs during product development and incorporating digital readiness, waste reduction and planning for closed-loop outcomes at the end of a product’s lifecycle.

Our targets aim to drive innovation at our service centres by rethinking product waste as a resource that retains value. This encourages net-positive outcomes and drives a more circular, efficient and resilient business model, while helping our customers advance their own sustainability priorities.

Brambles’ circular value chain: product design, our operations and end-of-life solutions feed the Circular Share and Reuse Model. Product design targets 100% of new products incorporating best practice circular design principles and 80% of virgin plastic purchases substituted with circular materials or solutions. End-of-life targets 100% of service centres with solutions to divert product waste from landfill, of which 80% of service centres use net-positive product waste solutions (closed-loop, regenerative, resource-positive and communities-positive) and 20% use other landfill avoidance solutions.

We aim to design durable, reusable platforms that can remain in use for as long as possible within our closed-loop share and reuse model, helping reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

Designing for circularity

At Brambles, circularity is central to how we design, manage and recover our products. We aim to design durable, reusable platforms that can remain in use for as long as possible within our share and reuse model, helping reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

Our approach considers the full product lifecycle – from design and material selection through to recovery and end-of-life management, with the objective of keeping materials in circulation at their highest practical value. At the same time, ambitions around recycled plastic content are increasing to substitute 80% of virgin plastics with circular solutions.

Strengthening water stewardship

In recognition of the growing awareness and need for action on water, we will be working towards implementing water efficiency initiatives at Brambles operated service centres in water-stressed areas.

We are also increasing our focus on data and site-level insights to help identify priority areas, support responsible water use and strengthen operational resilience over time.

Managing waste as a resource

We view waste as a resource and aim to divert all product waste from landfill through avoidance and recovery. Our target to implement solutions that divert product waste from landfill at all service centres has been further strengthened by prioritising those landfill avoidance solutions that are closed-loop, regenerative, resource-positive or communities-positive.

By keeping materials in use for longer, we aim to reduce dependence on virgin materials, including emissions-intensive inputs, such as plastics, while supporting lower-carbon and more resilient supply chains.

Our 2030 product waste solutions hierarchy

Brambles’ 2030 product waste solutions hierarchy, from most to least preferred: waste avoidance through direct reuse; product waste used in making another Brambles product (closed-loop solutions); biochar; compost, garden mulch, silt/erosion socks and biomass (wood waste) to energy onsite; durable recycled products displacing virgin materials, biomass (wood waste) to energy offsite and community donations where justified – all approved solutions considered net-positive, 80% of target. Firewood/energy briquettes with no community impact, recycled to absorptive materials, waste to energy (non-biomass), animal bedding and packaging fillers are approved solutions not considered net-positive, 20% of target. Landfill, incineration without energy recovery and dumping are not approved per Brambles’ targets.
